A little over 20 years ago my husband and I were renting a townhouse in Lexington, KY. We had a 2 year old and a brand new baby who had been hospitalized with viral meningitis at 5 weeks of age. My husband lost his job when the baby was maybe 8 weeks old. We had always paid our rent in advance, and had painted and done upgrades on our own. We were excellent tenants. Immediately after my husband lost his job, we called our landlord and told her what was going on, and let her know that we probably wouldn’t be able to stay much longer (we had a month to month agreement) without his income and because of the extensive medical bills we had incurred with our newborn. She asked us what we could afford to pay because she wanted to keep us as tenants. We came to an agreement. A few months later, my husband still hadn’t found a job. She then contacted us and asked us if it would make things easier for us if she lowered the rent even more. To this day, I won’t forget that woman’s kindness towards us during a very difficult period of our lives.
